Abstract

In Mexico, the high frequency of seismic events highlights the vulnerability of older buildings, particularly those constructed with reinforced concrete (RC) frames that prelude modern standards. This underscores the importance of strengthening such structures to reduce risks and enhance resilience against earthquakes. For this reason, many researchers have focused their efforts on proposing various strengthening techniques for critical structural elements such as columns. This study presents and discusses the results of experimental tests and compares them with a nonlinear numerical analysis to identify the variables that influence the lateral behaviour of non-ductile RC columns retrofitted with a steel jacket (SJ) composed of angles and battens. For the numerical analysis, a mathematical model was developed and calibrated using the finite element method, based on the results of an experimental study in which two full-scale non-ductile RC column specimens were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading without axial load, each with a different SJ configuration. The numerical analysis concluded that the key variables influencing the nonlinear lateral response performance were the fracture energy, the tensile strength, and the tension stiffening of the concrete.
