About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Journal of Earthquake Engineering aims to disseminate the results of original research and achievements in technological innovation and development of professional practice. It is mainly aimed at the Hispanic American community of researchers, teachers, professionals and students related to seismic engineering and to similar disciplines. Articles in all areas of earthquake engineering are accepted for publication. The magazine covers various topics such as:

  1. Seismology, seismicity and zoning
  2. Resilience of structures
  3. Hazard, vulnerability, reliability and risk
  4. Soils, soil-structure interaction and foundations
  5. Methods and innovating earthquake-resistant systems in professional practice
  6. Analysis, design and earthquake regulation of buildings
  7. Analysis, design and earthquake regulation of special structures
  8. New earthquake-resistant technologies
  9. Experimental behavior of systems or elements, instrumentation
  10. Assessment, repair and retrofitting of earthquake damaged structures
  11. Structural risk for other extreme events
  12. Mega disasters

Journal History

The SMIS journal has gone through several stages. In its initial stage, it was christened Mexican Earthquake Engineering Society Journal, and at this time four volumes were published. From September 1969 the magazine changed its name to Earthquake Engineering Journal, and began to be numbered, starting with number 1. At this time the magazine also underwent various transformations in its presentation, particularly on its cover.
Number 1 to number 7 had an orange cover. From Number 8 (September 1972) to No. 20 (January-April 1978) a blank cover page with a map of Mexico vibrating in shades of blue was used, this being one of the most representative logos for identification , reason why it was decided to use it on the CD cover. After a smooth transition logo at 21, it began using the Ollin, symbol of the Aztec calendar depicting earthquakes. This very representative symbol, which is also included on the CD cover began to be used from the number 22 (December 1980) until No. 43 (December 1991), which is the last number it was published as Seismic Engineering Journal. However, between numbers 22 and 43 there are three
exceptions in the presentation of the cover. The numbers 25 and 26 have a cover alluding to seismic design of industrial structures, and number 30, plus
Ollin, you have an allusive map to the seismicity of Mexico.

Seismic Engineering Magazine became the current Journal of Earthquake Engineering from 44th January to March 1992, preserving the ISSN number, but
it changed its presentation on its cover for a simpler blue vertical stripe on the right side, where the index of the Journal is included.
